10 Signs Your Dog Needs Emergency Vet Care
As a dog owner, one of the most frightening experiences is not knowing whether your pet’s symptoms are serious enough for emergency care. At Animal Republic Veterinary Hospital & Emergency in Huntington Beach, we see dogs in critical condition every week — many of whose owners wished they had come in sooner.
This guide will help you recognize the 10 warning signs that require immediate veterinary attention.
1. Difficulty Breathing
If your dog is gasping, breathing very rapidly, or struggling to catch their breath, this is a medical emergency. Breathing difficulties can indicate heart failure, pneumonia, or airway obstruction. Do not wait — call us immediately at (714) 274-9305.
2. Pale, Blue, or White Gums
Healthy dog gums should be pink and moist. Pale, white, blue, or gray gums indicate poor circulation or internal bleeding and require emergency care right away.
3. Collapse or Sudden Weakness
If your dog suddenly collapses, cannot stand, or seems extremely weak, this could signal a neurological emergency, severe anemia, or a cardiovascular problem. Bring your dog in immediately.
4. Seizures
A seizure lasting more than 2–3 minutes, or multiple seizures in a short period, is life-threatening. Keep your dog calm and away from furniture, and bring them in immediately.
5. Suspected Poisoning or Toxin Ingestion
Did your dog eat chocolate, grapes, xylitol, rat poison, or household chemicals? Time is critical. Our team at Animal Republic is experienced in toxicity and poisoning treatment for pets.
6. Uncontrolled Bleeding
Wounds that won’t stop bleeding after 5 minutes of gentle pressure need immediate veterinary attention. Internal bleeding may not be visible but can also be life-threatening.
7. Severe or Repeated Vomiting
Occasional vomiting can be normal, but repeated vomiting, blood in the vomit, or vomiting combined with lethargy and weakness is serious and requires immediate evaluation.
8. Bloated or Distended Abdomen
A swollen, hard belly — especially in large breed dogs — can indicate GDV (gastric dilatation-volvulus), which is fatal without immediate surgery. This is one of the most time-sensitive emergencies in veterinary medicine.
9. Eye Injuries or Sudden Vision Changes
Eye injuries can deteriorate very rapidly. Cloudiness, squinting, discharge, or a visibly injured eye should be seen the same day — do not wait until the next morning.
10. Inability to Urinate
Straining to urinate with little or no output can indicate a urinary blockage — a life-threatening emergency, especially in male dogs. This requires immediate care.
