Senior Pet Care for Dogs and Cats

As dogs and cats age, their health needs change and require closer monitoring. At Animal Republic Veterinary Hospital and ER, we provide senior care focused on maintaining comfort, mobility, and quality of life for aging pets.

Aging can affect many body systems. Senior pets commonly develop joint and mobility problems such as arthritis, dental disease, and reduced vision or hearing. Older pets may also develop heart disease, thyroid disorders, kidney or liver disease, hypertension, and an increased risk of cancer. Regular veterinary evaluations help detect these conditions early and allow for better management.

Nutrition also becomes more important as pets age. Many senior pets benefit from diets designed to support joint health, digestion, and weight control. Easily digestible foods may help reduce strain on aging organs. Some pets may also benefit from supplements, which should be recommended by a veterinarian based on the pet’s individual needs.

Senior pets should receive regular veterinary visits, ideally every six months. These visits often include physical examinations, blood work, urinalysis, blood pressure monitoring, and imaging when needed. Early detection through routine screening helps identify problems before they become severe.

Treatment plans for senior pets may include medical management of chronic diseases, pain control for arthritis or other conditions, nutritional guidance, and continued vaccination and parasite prevention. With proper monitoring and preventive care, many pets can remain comfortable and active well into their senior years.
