Dog throwing up? Seen today
If vomiting or diarrhea started this morning, have your pet seen today, not at an appointment next week.
Mon–Sat, 9 AM–8:30 PM · Tue to 6 PM
When to come in today
Bring them in if
Most single episodes settle on their own. These are the signs that it may not, and that waiting could make your pet sicker.
- It has happened more than two or three times, or it is getting worse
- There is diarrhea alongside it
- They cannot keep water down
- They are a puppy or a kitten — both dehydrate quickly
- They are old, or already being treated for something else
- They may have eaten something they should not have
Go straight to emergency instead if there is blood in the vomit, if your dog is retching without bringing anything up, or if the belly looks hard and swollen. Emergency care · If they ate something toxic
What we do here
Find the cause, settle the stomach
We examine your pet and run only the tests needed to find the cause.
- Bloodwork run in our in-house laboratory during the visit
- Digital X-ray and ultrasound on site, if a blockage is possible
- Fluids, anti-nausea medication and pain relief as needed
- A surgical suite in the same building if a swallowed object is found
What to expect
No appointment needed
Walk in
Patients are seen in order of medical urgency, so a critical case arriving after you may be seen first.
Exam and tests
Usually an examination and bloodwork, with X-rays or ultrasound if what you tell us suggests something is stuck.
Plan and estimate
You hear what we found and what it costs before we proceed.
Cats too
Vomiting in cats often has different causes
An occasional hairball is usually not a worry. A cat who vomits repeatedly, or who vomits and then stops eating, needs bloodwork, not just watching at home — kidney disease, thyroid disease and pancreatitis can all show up this way. If your cat has not eaten for a day, see not eating or not themselves. We are a Gold-level Cat Friendly Practice®.

Common questions
Questions we are asked
How much vomiting means my pet should be seen today?
As a rule of thumb, more than two or three episodes, any vomiting where water will not stay down, or vomiting with diarrhea in a young or old patient is worth a same-day exam. Call (714) 274-9305, describe what is happening, and we will tell you whether to come in now.
Should I withhold food at home?
Ask us before fasting your pet: fasting recommendations depend on your pet's age, health, and planned procedure; puppies, kittens, and diabetic pets may require different instructions.
When is vomiting an emergency rather than urgent?
Blood in the vomit, retching without bringing anything up, a hard or bloated abdomen, collapse or pale gums are emergencies. Come straight in and call (714) 274-9305 on the way.
