What pet surgery costs, and what affects the price
Every patient and procedure is different, so surgical estimates are individualized. Here is what goes into one, so the figure is not a surprise.
Five Essential Components of Care
What’s Included in a Surgical Estimate
Every patient and procedure is different, so surgical estimates are individualized. However, each estimate is designed to account for the same essential components of safe surgical care.
Pre-Anesthetic Bloodwork
Performed in our in-house laboratory before anesthesia. Results help us identify potential concerns and, when necessary, adjust the anesthetic protocol or surgical plan.
Anesthesia & Monitoring
An individualized anesthetic protocol with continuous monitoring, including ECG, blood pressure, capnography, pulse oximetry, and active temperature support.
The Surgical Procedure
Includes the procedure itself, surgical suite, surgical time, and the materials or implants required for your pet’s specific procedure.
Pain Management
Multimodal pain control before, during, and after surgery, including local anesthetic techniques when appropriate and medications for recovery at home.
Recovery & Aftercare
Post-anesthetic recovery and monitoring in the hospital, written discharge instructions, and scheduled follow-up care such as a recheck or suture removal when indicated.
What affects the cost
Why the same surgery can cost different amounts
The cost of surgery varies from patient to patient because the procedure and level of care are not always the same.
- Your pet’s size and species — these affect anesthesia, medications and supplies
- The complexity and length of the surgery
- Whether implants, plates or specialized materials are needed
- Whether recent pre-anesthetic bloodwork is already available
- Age and existing medical conditions that may require additional monitoring or support
- Recovery needs — whether your pet goes home the same day or requires hospitalization and ICU care
How we handle it
We give you a written estimate after an examination
Surgical costs vary depending on your pet’s condition, the procedure, and the level of care required. Because an accurate estimate starts with understanding your pet’s needs, we provide a personalized written estimate after the examination rather than guessing over the phone.
We will review the estimate with you, explain what it includes, and answer your questions before treatment. If additional care becomes necessary, we will discuss it with you whenever possible before proceeding.
If cost is a concern, please tell us during the consultation. When medically appropriate, there may be more than one reasonable way to approach a problem, and we are happy to discuss the available options with you.
Where to start
The first step is an examination
We need to examine your pet before we can give you an accurate estimate.
Common starting points: spay and neuter, lump and mass removal, a swallowed foreign body, or a second opinion on a plan you already have.
Common questions
Questions we are asked
Can you give me a price over the phone?
We can tell you what goes into the estimate and what the examination will cost. Because an accurate estimate requires an examination, we provide a personalized written estimate after evaluating your pet rather than guessing over the phone.
Do you offer payment plans or financing?
We accept CareCredit, Scratchpay and Cherry. Ask at the consult and you will get a clear answer.
Will the final bill match the estimate?
We will review the estimate with you, explain what it includes, and answer your questions before treatment. If additional care becomes necessary, we will discuss it with you whenever possible before proceeding.
