Pet vaccinations and parasite prevention
Wellness exams, vaccinations, deworming and parasite prevention, tailored to your pet’s age, health status and lifestyle.
Wellness exams
Routine veterinary exams
Regular check-ups are vital for maintaining your pet’s health and detecting potential issues early. During these exams our veterinarians will:
- Assess your pet's physical condition and vital signs
- Perform a thorough physical examination
- Discuss any concerns or changes in behavior
- Recommend diagnostic tests if needed
- Update vaccinations and parasite prevention as necessary
Core vaccines
Vaccines every pet should have
Core vaccines protect against widespread and severe diseases.
Dogs
Canine distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, rabies, and Leptospirosis (recommended as a core vaccine in California).
Cats
Feline distemper (panleukopenia), feline herpesvirus, feline calicivirus, Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), and rabies.
Non-core vaccines
Vaccines based on your pet’s lifestyle
Non-core vaccines are recommended based on your pet’s lifestyle, risk of exposure and specific health needs. For dogs these include canine influenza, canine parainfluenza (kennel cough), the canine Lyme vaccine, canine enteric coronavirus and the canine rattlesnake vaccine.
A dog who hikes in the Orange County backcountry faces different risks from one who walks around the neighborhood. We will talk through which of these actually apply to your pet rather than giving every one by default.
Parasites
Deworming and prevention
Regular deworming prevents and treats intestinal parasites. Our protocols cover roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms.
We also offer comprehensive protection against:
- Fleas and ticks — monthly preventatives against infestations and tick-borne diseases
- Heartworms — monthly or quarterly preventatives against heartworm disease, which can be life-threatening if untreated
- Ectoparasites (parasites that live on the skin) — prevention and treatment for fleas, ticks and mites
Common questions
Questions we are asked
Which vaccines does my pet actually need?
Core vaccines are recommended for all pets. Non-core vaccines depend on lifestyle and exposure risk — a hiking dog and an indoor cat need different protection. Our protocols are tailored to your pet's age, health status and lifestyle, and we will explain why each one is or is not recommended.
Is Leptospirosis a core vaccine?
At Animal Republic, Leptospirosis is recommended as a core vaccine in California, alongside canine distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus and rabies.
How often does my pet need a wellness exam?
Regular check-ups let us detect problems early, before they become expensive or painful. We will recommend a schedule based on your pet's age and health — younger and senior pets are generally seen more often.
