Urgent care for dogs and cats
For problems that are not life-threatening but should not wait a week for an appointment. You are seen in the same hospital, by the same team, with the same diagnostics as our emergency patients.
Bring your pet in for
Problems that need attention today
If it started this morning and it is getting worse, it should be seen today rather than waiting for an appointment next week.
- Vomiting or diarrhea that started today
- A limp that appeared overnight
- Wounds, bite injuries and abscesses
- Ear infections and sudden ear odor or head-shaking
- Sudden itching, hives or a mild allergic reaction
- Eye irritation, squinting or discharge
- Urinary accidents or straining in the litter box
- Lumps or swellings that changed quickly
- A pet who is simply not themselves
Where the line is
Urgent care or emergency?
Urgent care is for problems that should be seen today. An emergency needs care right now. If you are unsure, treat it as an emergency.
Go straight to emergency for difficulty breathing, pale or blue gums, collapse, seizures, uncontrolled bleeding, a bloated or hard abdomen, suspected poisoning, or straining to urinate with no output.
See emergency care · or call (714) 274-9305 and describe what you are seeing.
If you arrive and your pet turns out to need emergency treatment, you do not have to go anywhere else — the emergency team, the ICU and the surgical suite are all available in-house.
Why it helps to be here
Tests and treatment in one hospital
Urgent problems usually need an answer during the same visit. Everything needed to get one is on site.
In-house laboratory
Bloodwork results during the visit, instead of sending samples out and waiting until tomorrow.
Digital X-ray & ultrasound
X-rays and ultrasound during the visit, including ultrasound-guided sampling (using ultrasound to guide the needle when taking a sample).
Surgical suite
If a wound or a foreign body (something your pet swallowed) needs surgery, it happens here.
AAHA standards
We follow AAHA standards for anesthesia, pain control and monitoring.
What to expect
How an urgent care visit works
Call ahead if you can
It lets us tell you whether to come now and what to bring.
Walk in
No appointment is needed. Patients are seen in order of medical urgency, so a critical case arriving after you may be seen first.
Exam and diagnostics
We examine your pet and run only the tests needed to find out what is wrong.
Plan and estimate
You hear what we found and what it costs before we proceed.
Not sure if it’s urgent?
Call us — we can help
If you’re unsure whether your pet needs urgent care, give us a call and tell us what you’re seeing. Our veterinary team can help you decide whether your pet should be seen right away or whether it is reasonable to monitor at home. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s always okay to call.
Common questions
Questions we are asked
Do I need an appointment for urgent care?
No. Walk-ins are welcome at Animal Republic Veterinary Hospital & Emergency. Calling (714) 274-9305 before you come helps us prepare, and lets us tell you whether your pet's problem should be treated as an emergency instead.
What are your hours?
Monday through Saturday, 9 AM to 8:30 PM, and until 6 PM on Tuesday, at 6937 Warner Avenue, Huntington Beach, CA 92647. We are closed on Sundays. When we are closed, new emergencies are referred to a 24-hour emergency facility.
Will I be seen right away?
Patients are seen in order of medical urgency rather than arrival time. A quiet waiting room can still mean a wait if a critical patient is being stabilized. We will tell you what to expect when you arrive.
Can you treat my cat as well as my dog?
Yes. We treat dogs and cats, and we are a Gold-level Cat Friendly Practice®, so feline patients are handled to standards set by the American Association of Feline Practitioners in a low-stress environment.
