Cut, bite or wound? Seen today

Wounds get harder to close the longer they are open. We see wounds the same day, and our surgical suite is here if the wound needs more than a bandage.

Mon–Sat, 9 AM–8:30 PM · Tue to 6 PM

When to come in today

Bring them in for

A wound that is still bleeding heavily is an emergency. Everything below is what urgent care is for.

  • Any bite wound, however small it looks
  • A cut that gapes open, or one deeper than the skin
  • A torn or cut paw pad, or a broken nail bleeding at the base
  • A swelling that is hot and painful — usually an abscess (a pocket of pus)
  • A wound your pet will not stop licking
  • Anything that happened more than a few hours ago and is now looking worse

Straight to emergency for bleeding you cannot slow with pressure, a dog attack, or a wound with tissue or bone visible. Emergency care

What we do here

How we clean and close a wound

Closing a dirty wound traps infection inside it. Most of the work happens before the stitches.

  • Pain relief first, then clipping, cleaning and exploring the wound
  • Advanced wound management, which this hospital treats as its own service
  • Closing the wound, placing a drain, or leaving it open with dressings — whichever the wound actually needs
  • Our own surgical suite if it goes deeper than the skin

What to expect

Most pets go home the same day

  1. Walk in

No appointment needed. Patients are seen in order of medical urgency.

  2. Clean and assess

Under sedation if the wound cannot be cleaned and checked gently while your pet is awake.

  3. Plan and estimate

You hear what we found and what it costs before we proceed, including whether antibiotics are genuinely needed.

Bites

Why a bite wound is more serious than it looks

Bite wounds are the injury owners most often decide to watch at home.

A bite pushes bacteria under the skin, and then the small entry hole seals over and traps them inside. Two days later it is an abscess. Cat bites do this more than any other bite, on other cats and on people — if you were bitten breaking up a fight, see your own doctor as well.

Common questions

Questions we are asked

Does a small cut really need a vet?

A shallow scrape often does not. A cut that gapes, a bite of any size, and anything on a paw pad or near a joint does. Call us and tell us what you're seeing. Our veterinary team can help you determine how urgently your pet should be seen.

Will my pet need stitches?

It depends on the depth, the contamination and how long it has been open. Some wounds heal better if they are left open and covered with dressings. We will explain which one yours is and why before we start.

What about a swelling that appeared with no wound?

That is often an abscess from a bite you never saw, particularly in cats. It needs draining rather than antibiotics alone, and it is a same-day visit.
